How Do You Let Go?

We often hear our yoga teacher saying "Let go" but what does that mean? How do we do it?

We usually mean the phrase as an encouragement to relax and slow down. Trying to use our mind to 'let go' is darn near impossible because in effect we are using our mind to overcome our mind. Now that is a difficult task! Our mind is busy thinking of the very thoughts causing us stress and tension that we are trying to let go of. So what is the answer?

The answer is that beautiful thing called breath! Our breath is a neglected indicator of our health and well being. I'd like you to try to let go using a very soft 'ahhh' sound in the back of your throat as you breathe out. You might sound a little like a quiet Darth Vader; it is the best way to describe it. A barely audible, soft, 'ahhh' sound. At the end of the exhale, ahhh sound, just rest there in that space, awareness, not doing anything. Not doing is an beautiful thing to do in this fast world. Use the 'ahhh' to let go of any strong emotions or thoughts that might arise. The next in breath will arrive without any effort at all.

HOW TO DO IT

Find a comfortable position seated or lying down

Place your attention on your inhale and exhale for around 10 breaths

Then just notice how it feels to be breathing, aware and still

On the next breath out simply say 'ahhh' softly and slowly

Release, let go

Notice the silence, the space

Repeat as needed as you allow the in breath to arrive without any effort

Simply allow the 'ahhh' to dissolve your awareness into space, thoughts ,emotions dissolve

As you reach the end of your practice take a few normal breaths for you and rest in the silence and stillness until ready to go back to your day.
