Why does Balance Feel so Hard?

🌿

Finding Your Balance with Tree Pose 🌿

Welcome back, yogis!

This month we’re exploring balance in our practice especially tree pose, (Vrksasana), . It's often times wobbly! If you’ve ever felt like a “tree in the wind” instead of firmly rooted, you’re not alone. Me too! Let’s break it down and understand *why* balance can feel so tricky—and how to improve it.

How to Practice Tree Pose

1. Start strong: Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.

2. Shift your weight into your left foot, grounding firmly through all four corners.

3. Place your right foot in one of may options:

toes on the floor, heel resting on your ankle

foot to your calf

sole of the foot to your inner thigh

4. Find your focus (Drishti): Pick a steady point in front of you.

5. Bring your hands together at your chest—or reach them overhead like branches.

6. Breathe and hold for 5–8 breaths, then switch sides.

💡 Tip: It’s okay to wobble—trees sway, bend and sway!* Wobbling builds strength.

Why Does Balance Feel So Hard?

Balance isn’t just about strength—it’s actually a coordination between **three key systems in your body**:

Inner Ear (Vestibular System)

This system senses your head position and movement, helping you stay upright and oriented.

Eyes (Visual Input)

Your vision gives you external reference points—this is why focusing on one spot helps stabilize you.

*Body Awareness (Proprioception)

Tiny sensors in your muscles and joints constantly send signals to your brain about where your body is in space.

👉 When you balance in Tree Pose, your brain is rapidly processing information from all three systems and making micro-adjustments to keep you steady. If even one system is challenged (like closing your eyes), balance becomes much harder!

🌱 Build Better Balance

Here are a few simple ways to improve:

Practice regularly: Balance is a skill that develops over time.

Use support: Stand near a wall or hold a chair if needed.

Engage your core and legs: Stability starts from within.

Challenge yourself: Try closing your eyes for a few seconds once you feel steady.

Be patient: Progress might be slow—but it *will* come.

💬 Final Thought

Balance isn’t about being perfectly still—it’s about learning how to adjust, adapt, and stay present. Every wobble is part of the process. Every wobble is growth.
